What you need to know about Herpes Simplex type 1 and 2

Herpes simplex viruses -- more commonly known as herpes -- are categorized into two types: herpes type 1 (HSV-1, or oral herpes) and herpes type 2 (HSV-2, or genital herpes). Most commonly, herpes type 1 causes sores around the mouth and lips (sometimes called fever blisters or cold sores). HSV-1 can cause genital herpes, but most cases of genital herpes are caused by herpes type 2. In HSV-2, the infected person may have sores around the genitals or rectum.Although HSV-2 sores may occur in other locations, these sores usually are found below the waist.

Amazingly, under a microscope, HSV- 1 and 2 are virtually identical. They share approximately 50%of their DNA.  Both types infect the body's mucosal surfaces, usually the mouth or genitals, and then establishes residence in the nervous system. The primary difference between the two viral types is in where they typically establish residence in the body. Both Types of Herpes have a  "site of preference." HSV-1usually establishes residence the trigeminal ganglion, a collection of nerve cells near the ear. From there, it tends to recur on the lower lip or face.HSV-2 usually sets up residence in the sacral ganglion at the base of the spine. From there, it recurs in the genital area . But not everyone who gets the herpes simplex virus develops cold sores. In some people, the virus stays dormant (asleep) permanently.

How common is it?

The disease is very common.  According toWikipedia, Worldwide rates of HSV infection are between 65% and 90%. HSV1 is more common than HSV2 with rates of both increasing as people age. Rates of infection are determined by the presence of antibodies against either viral species.

In the US, 57.7%of the population is infected with HSV-1 and 16.2% are infected with HSV-2. Among those HSV-2 positive, only 18.9% were aware that they were infected. About 1 million new cases are reported every year. Millions more likely go unreported.

 About one in five U.S. adults and teens have had a genital herpes infection -- and most don’t know it..  Genital herpes is a chronic, lifelong viral infection. At least 50 million persons in the United States have genital HSV infection. One out of four teens in the United States becomes infected with anSTD each year and by the age of 25, half of all sexually active young adults will get an STD. Women are more susceptible to herpes.

STDs can increase the risk of HIV. People with genital herpes have at least twice the risk of becoming infected with HIV if exposed to it than those without it.  Read more about herpes and HIV infection.

What Causes Herpes Infections andOutbreaks?

Herpes simplex type 1, through  sores on the skin, can be spread through kissing or sharing objects such as toothbrushes or eating utensils. In general, a person can only get herpes type 2  infection during sexual contact with someone who has a genital HSV-2 infection. It is important to know that both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be spread even if sores are not present.

Pregnant women with genital herpes should talk to their doctor as genital herpes can be passed on to the baby during childbirth.

Somethings that can trigger (wake up) the virus and cause attacks (or outbreaks) ofherpes can be brought on by the following conditions:

General illness (from mild illnesses to serious conditions)

Fatigue Physical or emotional stress

Immunosuppression due to AIDS or such medications as chemotherapy or steroids

Trauma to the affected area, including sexual activity


Sun exposure


Extreme Heat

What Are the Symptoms of HerpesSimplex?

When Herpes wakes up it will leave its home in the ganglion and follow the nervous system to a weakened nerve cell on the skin.    As it leave the ganglion it will send out signals it is coming.  It can stimulate the neurons along the cytoskeletal highway, creating  a tingling sensation. Thisis known as prodrome.


A warning sign (prodrome) is experienced by many people in recurring outbreaks.Warning symptoms which indicate the virus is becoming active, and is on its way to the skin's surface may include: 





general fatigue

flu-like symptoms


swelling of the lymph nodes in the area of outbreak


painful urination

pain in the buttocks, back of legs, lower back

Weakened Nerve Cells under the skin - The infected area is usually painful and may itch, burn or tingle, during the outbreak. Physica slymptoms of herpes simplex virus typically appear as a blister or as multiple blisterson or around affected areas -- usually the mouth, genitals, or rectum. The blisters break, leaving tender sores.  

The first episode is usually the most severe as most people have not been exposed to the virus before and antibodies will not have been produced to trigger the immune response. When the herpes virus gets into skin cells it reproduces itself and starts to multiply, making the skin red andsensitive. Blisters or bumps may appear on the area of contact, theblisters first opening, then healing with the regeneration of new skin tissue.

How is Herpes Spread?

Herpes is spreadby direct skin to skin contact. Unlike other viruses that you can get throught he air, herpes spreads by only by direct contact. For example, if you have a cold sore and kiss someone, you can transfer the virus to their mouth. Likewise,if you have active genital herpes and have vaginal or anal intercourse, you can give your partner genital herpes. Finally, if you have a cold sore and have oral sex by putting your mouth on your partner’s genitals, you can give your partner genital herpes.

When Is Herpes Most LikelyTo Be Spread?

Herpes is most easily spread when a sore is present, but, it is also spread at other times too. Some people notice itching, tingling or other sensations before they see anything on their skin. These are called "Prodromal Symptoms" and they warn that virus may be present on the skin. Herpes is most likely to be spread from the time these first symptoms are noticed until the area is completely healed and the skin looks normal again. Sexual contact (oral,vaginal, or anal) is very risky during this time.

Can Herpes Be Transmitted Without Symptoms? Yes! Sometimes those who know they are infected spread the virus between outbreaks, when no signs or symptoms are present. This is called"Asymptomatic Transmission."

Research also shows that herpes simplex infections are spread by people who don't know they are infected. These people may have symptoms so mild they don't notice them at all or else don't recognize them as herpes. About 60% of infected people do not know they are infected.  Due to this is are much safer in a relationship with infected person who is familiar with their body and are educated with STDs, then with someone who is uneducated with STDs

How Easily Herpes Spread?

Most people with genital herpes are just  as concerned about transmission-the likelihood of spreading the virus to a partner-as about their own health. On the other hand, few people with oral herpes, share this concern. Is this because one type is more contagious than the other?

No!!! Both viral types are easily transmitted to their site of preference, and can also be spread to other sites. Both are most contagious during active outbreaks, but are may be spread through viral shedding when there are no recognizable symptoms. According to Spruance, people with recurrent oral HSV-1 shed virus in their saliva about 5% of the time even when they show no symptoms. In the first year of infection, people with genital HSV-2 shed virus from the genital area about 6-10% of days when they show no symptoms, and less often over time. (Both of these figures reflect shedding as detected by viral culture.)  In other words, The longer someone has had herpes the less likely they are to have a shedding period.

However, possible transmission gets more complicated. Acquisition of one type is more difficult, though certainly possible, if you already have the other type. This is because either type, contracted orally or genitally, causes the body to produce antibodies, some of which are active against both HSV-1 and 2. This acquired immune response gives some limited protection if the body encounters a second type. When a person with a prior HSV infection does contract the second type,the first episode tends to be less severe than when there are no priorantibodies present.

This means oral HSV-1 is often the most easily acquired herpes infection. Usually the first herpes simplex virus that people encounter, oral HSV-1, is typically spread simply by the kind of social kiss that a relative gives a child. Because children have no prior infection with any HSV type, they have no immune defense against the virus.

By the time they're teenagers or young adults, about 50% of Americans have HSV-1 antibodies in their blood. By the time they are over age 50, some 80-90% of Americans have HSV-1 antibodies.

How Is Herpes Simplex Diagnosed?

Often, the appearance of herpes simplex virus is typical and no testing is needed to confirm the diagnosis. If a health care provider is uncertain, herpes simplex can be diagnosed with laboratory tests, including DNA -- or PCR --tests and virus cultures.

How Painful Is Herpes Simplex?

Some people experience very mild genital herpes symptoms or no symptoms at all. Frequently, people infected with the virus don't even know they have it. However, when it causes symptoms, it can be described as painful. This is  especially true for the first outbreak, which is often the worst. Outbreaks are described as aches or pains in or around the genital area or burning, pain, or difficulty urinating. Some people experience discharge from the vagina or penis.

Oral herpes lesions (cold sores) usually cause tingling and burning just prior to the breakout of the blisters. The blisters themselves can also be painful.


How often does one have an outbreak?

Just how much of a physical problem HSV poses for a person depends largely on three factors.

The first is how well the person's immune system is able to control the infection. Differences in immune response may be the main reason that some people are plagued by frequent cold sores or genital herpes outbreaks while others are not. It's also the reason that both HSV-1 and 2 can pose serious challenges for infants, who have a limited immune response; as well as for  people with compromised immune systems, including people with cancer, AIDS, severe burns, and people taking immunosuppressant medications.

The second factor affecting outbreaks is how long a person has had the infection. Over time, recurrences of both HSV- 1 and 2 tend to decrease, for reasons that aren't entirely clear. In the case of oral HSV-1, many of the approximately 100 million Americans acquired the virus when they were children. By the time they're adults, only some 5% of people are bothered enough to consider oral HSV-1 a medical problem, according to Spruance. Almost all of the approximately 40 million Americans infected with HSV-2 acquired the virus as teenagers or young adults.  For those with HSV 2, those who have recurring outbreaks experience an average of four to six episodes in the first year. Over time, as with oral infections, the number of outbreaks usually drops off.

The third factor that affects  the frequency of HSV -1 and 2outbreaks is whether the virus is took up” home” in its site of preference.While either HSV  type can infect both genital and oral areas, both types cause milder infections when they are away from "home" territory. When not making “home” in their site of preference, both type 1 and 2 seem to  lose most of their punch. For example, most people infected with HSV-1 in the genital area have few, if any, outbreaks after the initial episode, far fewer than is typical with either oral HSV-1 orgenital HSV-2. While experts estimate that some 30% of genital herpes infections in the United States may be caused by HSV-1, only 2- 5% of recurring genital outbreaks are caused by HSV-1. Research conducted by Lawrence Corey,MD, and colleagues at the University of Washington in Seattle shows that genital HSV-2 recurs 10 times more often than genital HSV-1.

According to astudy by Wald et al. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1995), among 110 women with genital herpes, the average number of recurrences per year for those with genital HSV-1 was zero. Other studies have shown an average of about one outbreak per year (Benedetti, Annals of Internal Medicine, 1994).

Similarly, HSV-2infection in the oral area-outside its site of preference-very rarely causes problems. First of all, oral, HSV-2 infections are rare, for reasons discussed below. But even when an infection occurs, recurrent outbreaks are uncommon. In one study (Lafferty et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 1987), oral HSV-2 recurred an average of 0.01 times a year in newly infected people. "I've never convincingly seen an oral type 2 recurrence," says Spruance.

A possible fourth factor affecting recurrence rate is viral type. According to the Lafferty study, genital HSV-2 infections were the most frequently recurring herpes infections, followed by oral HSV-1, genital HSV-1, and last of all, oral HSV-2.

Social  Views of Herpes

When an infected person first tells someone they have genital herpes, they may start by comparing the infection to oral herpes, or cold sores. Despite of scientific facts, the social stigma and negative emotional attitudes when dealing with genital herpes can make it hard to compare it objectively with an oral infection that most people casually accept. Viewing herpes with the negative assumptions of our society, many still believe there is a "good" herpes virus-HSV- 1, the usual cause of cold sores-and a "bad" herpes virus-HSV-2, the usual cause of genital herpes.

However, this is not an absolute. Either type can reside in either or both parts of the body and infect oral and/or genital areas. Unfortunately, many people aren't aware of this, which contributes both to the spread of type 1 and to the misperception that the two types are somehow different.

"People don't understand that you can have type 1 genitally or orally, that the two types are essentially the same virus,' says Marshall Clover, manager of the National Herpes Hotline." One type is associated with stigma, the other is"'just a cold sore"- our society has a euphemism for it so we don't even have to acknowledge that it's herpes. 

While HSV is frustrating and can be a painful condition for some people, in general the virus is less a medical problem than a social problem. For most of us, genital herpes is no more dangerous than a cold sore. However, whether we like it or not, there is  social prejudice  that is a reality against someone with genital herpes, no matter which virus causes it, "People have more trouble explaining to a new partner that they have genital herpes, even if it's HSV- 1,than if they have a cold sore," says Glover. "Just saying the word "genital" is like an anvil that pulls the sentence down".

For people who have trouble dealing with social attitudes toward genital herpes, the blatant double standard society applies to oral herpes can be frustrating, to say the least, but can send many of its infected into isolation, depression or to suicide. Realistically  though after reading about HSV, wouldn’t  it better to have this disease in your pants than on your face?

Can Herpes Be Cured?

There is no cure for herpes simplex. Once a person has the virus, it remains in the body. The virus lies inactive in the nerve cells of the trigeminal  or sacral ganglion until something triggers it to become active again

Prevention: Ways to Reduce Your Risk

1.Use a condom every time you have sex .A condom may protect you from the herpes virus if it covers the infected area. Male condoms offer good protection, only if the infected area on the male is covered or contact with the infected area on the female is prevented. Female condoms may offer better protection as they cover a larger area. Protection is lost if a condom slips or breaks and contact is made with the infected.  If you touch an infected area, immediately wash the area that came in contact with the sores.

2. Ask your partner if he or she has ever had a sexually transmitted disease. Most people whohave genital herpes don't know they're infected, so ask whether he or she has had any other sexually transmitted disease. People with a history of STDs are more likely to have genital herpes.

It may be awkward, but it's important to be honest with each other. Your partner may be afraid to tell you the truth if he or she fears a negative reaction. If your partner feels comfortable talking with you, you'll be more likely to get straight answers.

3.Ask your partner about his or her sexual history.Someone who hashad many sexual partners is more likely to be infected with the herpes virus.

4.Limit the number of sexual partners you have.The fewer sexual partners you have in your lifetime, the less likely you are to be exposed to the herpes virus.

5.Look with your eyes.  Have sex in thelight Don’t go in blind.  There is nothing wrong with relishing and looking your partner over for possible issues.  You will both thank yourself later.

6.Don't receive oral sex from somebody with a cold sore or without STD Testing. Oral Herpes which causes sores on the mouth,can be passed to the genitals through oral sex . Plus, who wants gonorrhea of the mouth

7.Ask your partner to be tested for STDs.If you think your partner is at high risk for genital herpes and other STDs, you may consider asking him or her to be tested. In that case, you should be tested, too.

8.Don't have sex while intoxicated. Alcohol and illicit drugs lower inhibitions and impair judgment. People tend to be less careful about practicing safer sex while intoxicated and they often regret it later.

9. Wait to have sex. The only way to be100% certain you won't get a sexually transmitted disease is to have just onesex partner who has no STDs -- and only if both of you stay monogamous for life.  Plus the earlier you have sex the more likely you are to contact herpes or another STD.

10.Try alternate forms of sexual intimacy. If you don't want to be monogamous or totally celibate until you find a life partner, you could greatly reduce your risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease by doing things that don't involve genital-genital contact or oral-genital contact, such as mutual masturbation.

 You ultimately decide what you are willing to deal with.  Make an educated choice.

What to Do if Your Partner Has Genital Herpes?

Getting information on genital herpes is one way to deal with your feelings. A partner who has genital herpes needs your support and acceptance.  The only way you can do that is to be truly educated. It took a lot of courage for your partner to tell you, and it means he or she cares about your well-being, health, and values your trust.  They are telling you because you are special to them or they love you..  A good loving partner never wants to share this part of themselves with you.  A person who tells you has integrity.   They want you to be safe and to trust them with your life. Telling you is the ultimate sacrifice.   For yes, you could reject them.  And it is your right.  Sometimes, as stated on other Herpes websites  "No good deed goes unpunished" is often a harsh fact of life.  But if you care for this person at all,  don't let it be that way in your relationship. Of course, your feelings and concerns matter, too. If you're uncomfortable with the idea of having sex with your partner again, or becoming sexually intimate for the first time, you're entitled to feel that way.

But instead of declaring the sexual part of your relationship is over or out of the question, think of ways you can be intimate without risking infection. You can reduce the risk of becoming infected through sexual intercourse by using condoms and avoiding sex when your partner has symptoms. There will always be some risk, even if  you practice safer sex, but you can minimize it as much as possible.

Get Informed About Genital Herpes Educate yourself about genital herpes if your partner has not explained it to your satisfaction.You'll find out that it's not as serious as it may seem, and that people can and do have wonderful relationships with great sex even though one of them has genital herpes.

Sometimes people in long-term relationships suspect that their partner has been cheating when heor she is diagnosed. That's not necessarily true, so don't make that accusation. Your partner could have been infected years or decades before you met.  Remember some people never have an outbreak.  Also, consider the possibility that you gave your partner herpes.  Millions of people live with genital herpes without having a clue that they're infected. In fact, health experts estimate that 60-90% of those who are infected in the United States don't know it.  A herpes infection doesn't always cause obvious sores on the genitals. In many cases, it causes no noticeable symptoms. Health care professionals say that sex partners of people with herpes should be tested, as that is the only way to know for sure if they are infected or not.

Reducing Baby’s Risk of Herpes Infection

Pregnant women with genital herpes should talk to their doctor as genital herpes can bepassed on to the baby during childbirth .Delivering a baby via cesarean section can protect an infant from infection with the herpes simplex virus (HSV). How Is Herpes Simplex Treated?

Although there is no cure for herpes, treatments can relieve the symptoms. Medication can decrease the pain related to an outbreak and can shorten healing time. They can also decrease the total number of outbreaks. Drugs including Famvir, Zovirax, and Valtrex are among the medications used to treat the symptoms of herpes. Warm baths may relieve the pain associated with genital sores. There are many ways to treat the disease including: diet, medication, topical ointments, herbs.

First and foremost the disease should be treated by diet. It is possible to significantly reduce outbreaks by eating healthy, avoiding certain foods and taking vitamin supplements to support a healthy immune system.


Avoid alcohol, processed foods, colas, white flour products, sugar, refined carbohydrates, coffee, and drug use. The following vitamin supplements are recommended by the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing:

Vitamin A-50,000 IU daily

Vitamin B-50mg or more 3 times daily

Vitamin C-5,000 – 10,000mg

Zinc chelate-50-100mg daily in divided doses

Vitamin E-600 IU daily

Calcium-1500 mg daily

Magnesium-750 mg daily


Consult your doctor about the appropriate course of medication for your circumstances. Your doctor will usually prescribe a treatment that follows theCDC recommedations. Their recommended course of treatment depends on whether or not this is the first episode, or a recurring episode. The CDC basic guidelines are as follows:

First episode:

Many patients with first-episode herpes present with mild clinical manifestations but later develop severe or prolonged symptoms. Therefore, most patients with initial genital herpes should receive antiviral therapy.

Recurring episode:

Effective episodic treatment of recurrent herpes requires initiation of therapy within 1 day of lesion onset, or during the prodrome that precedes some outbreaks. The patient should be provided with a supply of drug or aprescription for the medication with instructions to self-initiate treatment immediately when symptoms begin.

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer 

  cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have

  multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients

  that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after 

  treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the

  cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable



2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a 

  person's lifetime. 


3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer

  cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and

  forming tumors. 


4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has

  nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,

  but also to environmental, food and lifestyle factors. 


5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing

  d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole

  grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into

  an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked

  food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live

  enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to

  cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance

  growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building

  healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most

  vegetables including be an sprouts) and eat some raw

  vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at

Johns Hopkins has recently sent this out in its newsletters. This information is being circulated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center as well. Dioxin chemicals cause cancer, especially breast cancer. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic. Recently, Dr Edward Fujimoto, Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , was on a TV program to explain thishealth hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

In searching for a way to be healthier and happier even though I could not afford  to do things I found  out some interesting facts about hobbies.  Reading the article not only proved to me hobbies are life giving, but explained a little about my personality. People have always asked me if there was nothing I could not do.  I have always searched out hobbies and I have become quite proficient at many of them.   As a matter of fact, I made a few of them my work.  Now I enjoy everyday and try to find new ways to enjoy myself in my off time.  I am a healthy hobbyist.


 According to Wikipedia, a hobby is a spare-time recreational pursuit. Hobbies are practiced for interest and enjoyment, rather than financial reward.


Hobbies can engage you physically and mentally. People who have a hobby "are generally healthier," says Peter Lichtenberg, Ph.D., director of the Institute of Gerontology at Wayne State University. "We also know they are at a lower risk for depression and dementia. The great value of hobbies is they're a way for people to stay engaged on multiple levels."


Most hobbies involve at least some level of mental activity, Dr. Lichtenberg says. Because we enjoy most things more when we share them, hobbies offer a reason to stay connected to other people with similar interests.

According to a study at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, men with no hobbies have higher levels of illness and take more sick leave than their more involved counterparts.


It has also been shown that mortality risks are significantly higher in urban men who don't participate in hobbies, club activities or community groups, according to a study of more than 3,000 men by researchers at Gunma University School of Medicine in Maebashi, Japan.


And in Canada, researchers from the University of Manitoba have shown that higher overall activity levels in older people promote happiness, improve functioning and lower mortality rates.


What's more, while the social and productive activities tend to produce physical benefits in terms of health and longevity, the more solitary pursuits, such as handiwork hobbies or a love of reading, bring more psychological benefits in providing a sense of engagement with life.

Even in centenarians, and among those with disabilities, ‘maintenance of social relationships is of major importance for survival', according to a study from the University of Rome ‘La Sapienza'.


What kind of hobby is best? Hobbies that require expertise are more satisfying, Dr. Lichtenberg says. That's because developing an expertise in something like photography or astronomy requires commitment, and commitment results in a higher level of engagement. Of course, hobbies that involve physical fitness, such as walking, "provide a physical benefit as well," he says.


Psychologist Michael Brickey, Ph.D., is the author of the book Defy Aging. His focus is on helping people stay physically and mentally active so they can enjoy their later years. Dr. Brickey says hobbies help by reducing stress and providing a sense of accomplishment.


"Hobbies can be thought of on three levels," Dr. Brickey says. "The first is as a diversion. Hobbies help us pass the time. The second is as a passion. When a hobby becomes a passion, we become truly engaged in doing something we love. It not only helps us pass time, it makes us unaware that time is passing. The third level is as something that creates a sense of purpose. We all need that." The ideal hobby, he says, combines all three levels.


Before deciding on your new hobby, it may be helpful to think about things that you wanted to learn to do in the past, but for whatever reason did not. If any of those old ideas still appeal to you, making it happen might actually end up resulting in the fulfillment of an old and forgotten dream.


3 things to help you find the hobby that fits you:

1. Try each thing at least 3 times before you kick it to the curb. The first couple of times trying something new can be awkward and less than encouraging. Give a few tries to get the hang of it.

2. Find someone to start with you. Spouse, sibling, friend, parent, child. Have someone to get you motivated, someone for you to motivate back. It will help deepen your relationships by sharing experiences.

3. Don’t give up. Keep trying different things until you find something that you absolutely love. The list is endless. Don’t even settle for kind of liking it. There is something out there for everyone.

1.    Walking your dog

That could be an extra 100 calories burned with your furry best friend.

If you’re house is bigger and you spend all or half a day doing it – you could burn 400 calories.   I was surprised that this is one of the most constructive exercises that burns the most calories and after I get to sit in a clean house.

4.    Just dance.

Many of the Dancing with the Stars contestants end up loosing a significant amount of weight and build muscle mass while on the show – you could too!

5.    Video games for weight loss

Nintendo Wii Fit is new to the weight loss scene and many people are reaping the benefits. It’s a perfect idea for those of you who like to play video games all the while in the comfort of your own home. How to Access your Enlightened Infinite Nature

We are all Enlightened Beings in disguise. Every being is born with full access to the highest peak of consciousness. If you look into a baby's eyes you will see it. The sparkle of their pure uncluttered untainted consciousness is there. You can see that there is no time or beliefs in control of their mind, there's just pure presence and awareness. They are a divine loving presence naturally, without even trying their Enlightened Nature shines through. This consciousness is in all of us for we were all once a baby.

If our Enlightened Nature is already here now, complete and whole in itself, why isn't the entire world filled with an abundance of Enlightened Beings? There is one little thing called the "ego". The mind gets in the way and obscures this pure being. It's like a fish in a fishbowl swimming around, causing all the muck to be stirred up distorting the clarity in the water. When the fish stops swimming and rests, the muck settles and everything becomes crystal clear. When you are in love with someone and you look deep into their eyes in that moment that your heart is bursting with joy, what do you see? If your mind is crystal clear you will only experience the loving, eternal, and divine aspects of their Enlightened Nature. The love frees this cluttered mind so you can see all the way through. By bringing the mind to a complete halt, the illusions of your mind disappear and you naturally experience the infinite source. This is secret to discovering Enlightenment.

The very instant you empty out your mind and take a good long look inside yourself, you'll discover something quite amazing. You are infinite and an eternal soul that cannot be burned by fire or wet by water. You are this forever expanding consciousness. Any joyful sensations you experience by simply being silent simply affirm how you are deeply connected to an Infinite source of goodness within.

This indivisible divine energy is very powerful when you connect with it, and when you find it you'll be able to shape shift your life in any way you'd like it to be.

Skin Care Tips:

A dry brush exfoliation can be done in the morning before you shower. It eliminates dead skin cells and allows the skin to detox (skin is the largest organ of elimination).Dry brush exfoliation  improves lymph and blood circulation and tends tp decreasepuffiness. An added benefit is that the gentle pressure is calming to the nervous system. To give yourself a dry brush exfoliation, you'll need a soft, natural bristle brush.

Invigorate Sluggish Circulation – Poor circulation can inhibit healthy glowing skin. Try these to imporve circulation:

Take a quick break to go outside and walk around the block.

Booka massage appointment.

Close your door and stretch.

Goto the gym.

Start each morning by stretching.

Get a skipping rope.

Avoid Excessive Sun: Wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15, even if it's cloudy or you don't planon spending a lot of time outdoors. If you sweat a lot or go swimming, reapply sunscreen every 2 to 3 hours (even if the bottle says the sunscreen is waterproof)

Smoking makes your skin look older and contributes to wrinkles. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of your skin, which decreases blood flow. This starves the skin of oxygen and nutrients, such as vitamin A, that are vital to skin health. Smoking damages collagen and elastin fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity. Lastly, the repetitive facial expressions you make when smoking, such as pursing your lips whil inhaling and squinting your eyes to keep out smoke may contribute to wrinkles.

Daily cleansing and shaving can take a toll on your skin, so keep it gentle:

Limit bath time. Hot water and long showers or baths remove oils from your skin. Limit your bath or shower time, and use warm rather than hot  water.  Your oil not only keep you soft and subtle , but keeps you waterproof.

Avoid strong soaps. Strong soaps  strip oil from your skin. Choose mild cleansers. Your shampoo should be ph balanced and can be used as shower gel or facial cleanser.  Check out Nioxin.

Shave  with care. Protect and lubricate your skin, by applying shaving cream, lotion, gel or even your hair conditioner before shaving. For the closest shave, use a clean, sharp razor. Shave in the direction the hair grows, not against it.  Do not store your razor in the shower.  Great place for bacteria to grow.

After washing or bathing, gently pat or blot your skin dry with a towel so that some moisture remains on your skin,  then moisturize dry skin. Find a moisturizer that fits your skin type and makes your skin look and feel soft.

A healthy diet can help you look and feel your best. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains and lean proteins. The association between diet and acne still isn't clear but, some research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in fats andcarbohydrates may promote younger looking skin.

Drinklots of water.  Water is very important inkeeping the largest organ of the body refreshed and hydrated.

Stress can make your skin more sensitive and trigger acne breakouts and other skin problems. Takes steps to manage your stress. Set reasonable limits, scale back your to-do list and make time to do the things you enjoy. The resultscould be life changing.

Try witch hazel as a natural alternative.Witch hazel is well-known for its soothing powers on the skin. When your skin feels rough or blistered, witch hazel is a great natural way  to make it feel better. It can be used to both clean the skin and to soothe it making it a great toner. This makes products with witch hazel perfect for many different types of irritation and skin conditions. The herb is also a useful for naturally treating eczema and psoriasis.

Don’t pop pimples. Pimples heal faster if you just leave them alone, and they dont look so big and red either. You push bacteria deeper into the skin when you pop pimples. Best thing to do is not touch themat all.  Try these instead:

1.       Use an oatmeal  mask throughly to cleanse your face. Mix either oatmeal  with enough rose water to make a soft paste that spreads easilyon the skin. Rub it on your skin with your fingertips, paying special attention the problem areas. Leave to dry for about 15 minutes and then rinse off with cold water.

2.      Apply grated potatoes as poultice to treat skin blemishes, wrinkles, boils, acne scars, blackheads and whiteheads

3.       Make a paste of neem leaves with turmeric powder. Apply on affected area. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water,

4.       Heat a  cup of tea, drink the tea, but put the tea bag on your problem area.  The tannic acid in tea will pull out infection causing your acne, boil or inflammation.

Weird and unusual Skin treatments:

Duct tape for blackhead removal.  Ouch!


Hemorrhoid creams are great remedies for puffiness under the eye and also for fine lines. When using for eye puffiness, carefully smooth in to thepuffy area, let it absorb into the skin, and then apply make-up as normal.

A weird but wonderful home remedy for tightening the skin; is Pepto-Bismol. The ingredients in Pepto work well as a facial tightening masque. Remove the application with warm water. This also works great for aiding in the removal of cold sores.




Healthy Hair Tips

As Personal Care Specialists, we are often asked tips of great hair and Skin.  Here are some of our favorites for all around great hair and skin.

Basic hair tips:

Don'trip your brush through snarls.If you don't have detangler spray, wet the area and generously apply conditioner and work it through evenly.. Brush gently  with a Vent Brush and slowly work the tangles out.

 DO NOTwash hair too often : It will dry your hair up and may cause greasy/oily looking hair. If you have dry hair, use a hydrating shampoo.

Always use cool water, after shampooing your hair rinse and condition it out. This will seal the cuticlesand prevent frizz and dryness.

Use large tooth comb when applying condition or  combing your hair.

Opt for a baby brush for smoothing the edges of dry hair.

Air-dry whenever possible. Try to minimize the use of blow dryer asthe strong heat tends to damage the hair, also the moisture lost makes them look rough and lifeless.

Give your hair a break from that blow dryer, those curling irons. When you are kind to your hair, it rewards you by looking and feeling better.Choose a hairstyle that will let your hair fall naturally.

Get your hair trimmed on a regular basis (approximately every two months). This is especially important for growing out layers and/or bangs to reshape and make each stage of growing hairout a style. 


All Natural Products forHealthy Hair:

Tryrubbing lemon juice or apple cider vinegar into your roots: Thisencourages a  beautiful, shiny look andprevents greasy-looking hair and frizz. Use caution if you have dark hair when using lemon juice, it can lighten your hair color if you stay in the sun withit in your hair

Coffee not only wakes you up but can wake up the hair. Brew some regular coffee. Makesure to let it cool down  to avoid burning yourself, but make sure it is still warm. Pour it throughout dry hair then twist your hair into a bun and cover with a plastic cap. Let it sit for 30minutes then rinse out and use your usual shampoo and conditioner.  Coffee is very acidic and will leave your hair cuticle smooth and shiny. This will also enhance color. (Use caution if youhave blonde hair, darkening may occur)

Mayonnaiseand avocado oil:Depending on how long your hair is, use about 1 cup of mayonnaise and add 2 tablespoons of warm avocado oil. Mix up the ingredients and spread through hairas you would with conditioner. Use this home-made conditioner when you have plenty of free time because you want  to leave it in for about 3 hours. If possible,you can wrap your hair with plastic and leave the conditioner in overnight for a deeper conditioning. Rinse thoroughly and use your regular shampoo andconditioner.  Smothering the hair withMayonnaise is also a treatment for lice management


AppleCider Vinegar:  Shampoo your hair with your usual shampoo and rinse your hair thoroughly with warm running water . Measure two cups of applecider vinegar and one cup of water and rinse hair carefully with the mix. Leave vinegar and water mixture on your hair for fifteen minutes. Rinse the vinegar off your hair with clean warm running water until the vinegar smell dissipates.You will surprisingly find your hair is now detangled, healthy looking and manageable. Repeat process every week or less if desired. Apple cider vinegarsacidity level is close to that of natural hair. Not only does it detangle but,it's also an effective germ killer.

If you don't have detangler on hand, you can mix up some yourself.  

Fill a spray bottle with the following detangler mixture:

8 ounces distilled water

1 teaspoon aloe vera gel

10-15 drops grapefruit seed extract

1-2 drops glycerin

1-2 drops essential oil (e.g., lavender, jojoba, chamomile)


Tipsto Sleep on:

Get good quality and a correct amount of sleep to help with the naturalrejuvenation process

Your hair is like your skin - it can repair itself overnight. There are great natural products or products you can make that when left overnight can leave your hair healthy and shiny.

“Itis highly recommended to sleep on a silk pillow case as opposed to a cotton one.

Silk helps prevent tangling and dullness in your hair. The benefit of silk is your hair slides across the pillow case, whereas on cotton pillow case it catchesand tangles”

Sleeping with your hair in a bun or braid may make it easier to brush in the morning,and will control some of the frizz.

Eat and drink your way to healthier  skin and hair:

Drink plenty of water [7 to 8 glasses] water.  Always keep your body hydrated.

Eat foods that are rich with iron. Iron is very good for hair and skin. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Vitamin E is very useful to get shiny the hair. Eat more foods rich with Vitamin E Add brown rice, nuts, wheat germ and leafy green vegetables in your diet.


Interesting Hair Tips:

Rub tangled dry hair with a dryer sheet : prior to combing it out.

Erase Hair color stains left on the skin:,  Simply use a regular tube of toothpaste or cigarette ash. Apply a small dab to your finger and gently rub the toothpaste over the stained area of the skin.  Rinse with lukewarm water.  Repeat until the stain is removed.

Tame with Chapstick: put a little in on your fingertips and smooth it over baby hairs.

Use Mascara to temporarily cover up gray hair:  Chose a shade close to your own hair color.

11:11 and other triple digits.

Have you seen triple or more digits on clocks, addresses,your odometer or other digital objects? If you have it is believed that you are getting a wake-up call to becomewho you really are and to do your life’s purpose. 

This happened to me about 5 years ago.  All of a sudden, I was seeing  11:11 on the clock all the time.  When I went to the store I would get a totalowed of $3.33 and change of $2.22.  I wasseeing triple digits everywhere.  I wasso taken back one day by the amount of triple digits I was seeing andespecially the 11:11, that I mentioned it to my children.   The children told me it meant to make awish.  I asked them where they got thatinformation.  They told me everyone knewit and I could find it on the internet.  So I decided to go look up the answer. I love the internet for its research purposes.   

I do not remember exactly where I found some of theinformation I am going to share with you, because it was five years ago that Ilooked it up. However, I was asked by this sweet girl Stephanie who I met theother day to share what I have learned from both the internet and personalexperience.  Weirdly, she had just gottenback from meeting the Mayans.  It willmake since later.

So I typed in 11:11 on the computer.  Many websites came up, but the one I reallyliked was  I still rememberthat site and visit it from time to time.   Not to quote them, since I am writing thisfrom memory, but  11 is a master number,when seen together it is  a DNA reminderof who you are and reminds you of your psychic awareness.  I do not remember if it was this site thatsaid it is your wake up call to be a light worker and  help bring others to connection with thelight.  Not the light they speak of whenwe die, but the light of knowledge.   Theknowledge being:  the awareness  of the energies within us and around us and  new way of communicating with our world andour higher power through higher consciousness.

 This new consciousnessis to take place in the year 2012 on December 12 at 11:11.  Being a little bit of a skeptic and notoverly trusting of all self proclaimed prophets or mystics, I did not know whatto think.  I have always believed thereis more out there than meets the eye.  Ihave always been a search of faith.  Ihave visited many churches, read many books, studied history of religion andbeliefs just to come to my own view of faith. But without proof I always wondered if these people were charlatans,  manipulating  others to achieve power or fame.  Something I had seen many times in myresearch, especially when some of the dogmas of religion go so against thegrain of human nature.

Somewhere in my research I came across these definitions of tripledigits in the following chart.  I haveused them to help me pay attention to the synchronicities that  I have experienced in my life since becomingaware of triple digits.

333- Decision time. Make a choice between 666(material) or 999(spiritual)

I did try to find my source for this chart I have used foryears.  The closest I can was to ; This site speaks more in layman’s terms.  You will probably find it useful.

The way to use this chart is when you see one of thesenumbers, you take a breath and look around. You stop,  you think andappreciate your first thought.  You lookfor your synchronicity.   In doing this,many wonderful experiences have come my way. Answers to questions, proof that there is magic in numbers and in theworld.  That communication is not alwayswords spoken or written.  That there isenergy all around us and it speaks to you if you listen.  It will give you the answers you need.  It will take you on new paths. You just haveto pay attention.

I will give you one example before I conclude thistestimonial of numbers working to build our lives our universe and if you payattention how they can work for you.

One night and old friend was having what he thought was aheart attack.  However, he rememberedthat I had recently gone through a bout of anxiety that I had also thought wasa heart attack.  He was at home with hiswife and they were both very concerned about his current state.  They called and asked me what to do and whatthe symptoms were.  I explained the bestI could, but just to be sure since my friend tends to smoke a little too much,I suggested he go the hospital to make sure it was not a heart attack.  He asked me to come to the hospital with himand his wife.  I felt a littlestrange.  I was not sure how his wifewould feel about me going.  She hadalways been a little weird about her husband and I’s friendship. 

  I got in my car andput the key in the ignition, at the same time I asked my self and my God if Iwas doing the right thing going?  Iturned the car on.   It did the strangestthing and lost all power.  No lights nonothing.  So I turned the key back tooff.  When I did everything came backon.    When you lose power in a clock,what time shows up on the clock?  Most clocksgo back to 12:00 if I am correct.  Myclock in the car was 12:12. (A Comic connection, not a time a destination. Youare right where you should be).   My Godhad spoken to me.  I was in the car onthe way to my friend.  I had adestination to be right where I should be. I never questioned triple digits again. Now, I stop, I look, I listen, Ipay attention to my synchronicities.   I am thankful for the help.   MyGod, my angels, my deceased loved ones now all can speak to me for I slow downwhen I see these numbers.    Since then I have become a Reiki Master,using the energies to help other become balanced enough to see these energiesthemselves.  Originally, I became a ReikiPractitioner by accident.  I substitutedfor an absent teacher.  Her class wasReiki I.   Or was it an accident?  I think not. And to go a step further , I found myself an ordain Minister of theUniversal Life Church.  My faith beingthere is truth in all faiths.

Lastly, I made some tough changes recently concerning mybusiness.  I love being a business owner,but I want to have more time.  I decideto close my physical location  to try torent a booth somewhere a couple day a week. This would give me more time to do some of the things being a businessowner does not allow you to do like spending time with your family, writing andgoing back to school.  I did not want togive up what I do.  I love doinghair.  I just wanted more time for all mypassions.  The changes were to take placeon 1/10/11.

 Strangely, the newtenant of the space wanted to hurry things.  My business changes happened on 1/1/11 andthat very day my  car’s odometer  read  111,111.  1/11/11 was a new beginning for me, and oddlyenough I got all my wishes.  I am still abusiness owner, in the same space but, I now rent part time from the newtenant, my friend and former massage therapist. I still get to see my customers, but now I get to see my family, myfriends, build a life in my new home town. I get to write and learn.  I gotmy new beginning with a big synchronicity. Thank you!

Most of the client that I see have primary complaint of neck and back stiffness and soreness.

The general public suffers from these same ailments. Major causes are stress, poor body mechanics, poor posture and lack of proper stretching. In turn this could lead to chronic headaches, fatigue, impairs your mental alterness, high blood pressure, and more susibility to physical injuries and sickness. Trigger points are sometimes the culprit that causes such pain.

Trigger points are hypertonic(extremely tight area) or a knot in a muscle fiber which also can be found in tendons and ligaments. Symptoms are pain that travel to other area's of the body when the muscle is manipulated or palpated. Example is while having your neck is massaged, you feel pain up into the ear, head, jaw or down arm. This kind of trigger point is a latent trigger point.  This kind of pain goes un-noticed unless pressure is applied to muscle. Another name for this is Refered Pain Phenomina.

Common area's that are typical for having Trigger Points are; the neck, pectoral muscles, and upper back.  Although this can occur in any part of the body muscle tissue.

How to treat trigger point/referred pain.

Incorporating heat/ice into massage treatment such as hot and cold stones(fire and Ice)

Acupressure(sustained pressure- held pressure applied to area for a 3-7 second time frame) This technique relieves pain and discomfort within that time frame.

Friction (rubbing on surface over another)

Deep tissue glide (slow, deep, controlled glides usually perfomed along the muscle.

Positional release (positioning area to create a curve with light pressure held for 5-10 seconds. Example put head in lateral position at the point where pain is creating a curve at the pain site with light pressure and held)

Stretch (elongation of muscle)

Massage Therapy is a wonderful alternative tool to help treat a lot of ailments. It's cost effective, you will tend to take less pain killers that often times are harmful to your internal organs, cost effective, and beneficial to you mind, body, soul and well being.

Healing before the onset of PTSD

Recently, the staff of Styling Souls went through a traumatic event by the actions of one of its co-workers. The event left the staff,,scared, nervous, sad, angry, mad, feeling overwhelmingly helpless and some even felt some guilt for a situation that was totally out of their control. Some of us, suffered dearly from heart break, because one of our co-workers had chose a wrong path and we would never again be able to enjoy the company of that individual.

Traumatic events create feelings that can have long lasting effects, if not dealt with immediately. The staff of Styling Souls being trained professional immediately sought the help we would need to let the feelings associated with the event not haunt us and play over and over in our minds. Becoming healthy is an active choice we all have every second of every day. We made the choice to not suffer any longer than we had to and asked our staff, hypnotherapist, Matt Connarton if he could help us disassociate our feelings from the event.

We scheduled a group hypnotherapy session as soon as we could. Matt used a technique called swishing to help us replay the event in our heads in a different way, a way that would allow us to separate our feelings of anguish from the event. Soon after Matt’s hypnosis, session, I spent time sending Reiki to the effected staff, to aid them in their healing process. The results of both treatments methods were positive and the staff was able to get back to work and deal effectively with their feelings. Feelings that if left unattended could manifest into PTSD, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD is a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occurred or was threatened.

Since PTSD, can manifest itself from the date of trauma or years later it is best to deal with the feelings or situation immediately. According , there are 17 symptoms of PTSD. These 17 symptoms are divided into three separate clusters. The three PTSD symptom clusters, and the specific symptoms that make up these clusters, are described below.

“Re-Experiencing Symptoms

• Frequently having upsetting thoughts or memories about a traumatic event.

• Having recurrent nightmares.

• Acting or feeling as though the traumatic event were happening again, sometimes called a "flashback."

• Having strong feelings of distress when reminded of the traumatic event.

• Being physically responsive, such as experiencing a surge in your heart rate or sweating, to reminders of the traumatic event.

Avoidance Symptoms

• Making an effort to avoid thoughts, feelings, or conversations about the traumatic event.

• Making an effort to avoid places or people that remind you of the traumatic event.

• Having a difficult time remembering important parts of the traumatic event.

• A loss of interest in important, once positive, activities.

• Feeling distant from others.

• Experiencing difficulties having positive feelings, such as happiness or love.

• Feeling as though your life may be cut short.

Hyperarousal Symptoms

• Having a difficult time falling or staying asleep.

• Feeling more irritable or having outbursts of anger.

• Having difficulty concentrating.

• Feeling constantly "on guard" or like danger is lurking around every corner.

• Being "jumpy" or easily startled.

Many of these symptoms are an extreme version of our body's natural response to stress. Understanding our body's natural response to threat and danger (the fight or flight response) can help us better understand the symptoms.”

Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy- One study found that hypnotherapy, on its own, was at least as successful as some other treatments for PTSD, including psychodynamic psychotherapy. Another study found that hypnosis added to standard cognitive-behavioral therapy for PTSD may be just as effective as cognitive-behavioral therapy in improving PTSD symptoms up to 2 years following treatment. So, there is some evidence that hypnotherapy may be helpful for people with PTSD or other symptoms resulting from a traumatic experience.

It is important to know that hypnotherapy may not work for everyone. Some people are more suggestible than others. In addition, as with any treatment for PTSD, it is important get as much information as you can to make sure it is the right treatment for you. A number of treatments are available for someone with PTSD.

Reiki- Reiki for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder isn't new. Because of some surprising results in the treatment of PTSD, the US Army is investing $4Million to research Reiki and other "Bio-Energy" modalities of healing. In conjunction with the different therapies that have traditionally been used, Dr. John Fortunato, a clinical psychologist at Fort Bliss in Texas, realized that the other component to healing is to heal their mind body and spirit. Biofield therapies, including Reiki, are generally accepted as low-risk interventions. The widespread use of these therapies, coupled with anecdotal evidence of efficacy, indicate a need for further study of this important category of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

Avoid Allergies, Colds and Sinus Pressure

I am sitting at the doctor?s office patiently awaiting my turn to see the doctor. I picked up a parenting magazine to keep myself occupied. It has been a long time since I picked up a parenting magazine. My girls are now 16 and 18, young adults. It was nice to see the smiling babies and read the cute comments that children make. However, what really got my attention and is still lingering in my mind was a little blurb in the cold section. A simple little thing you could do to get rid of the sinus pressure of a cold or allergies. It is the simplest of solutions. It is absolutely pure and effective. Plain and simple -the use of a saline solution spray. Last week in the shop everyone was complaining of feeling sick. They had stuffy heads, sinus pressure and were not focusing well on anything. They are always mad at me, because I do not get really sick like them. I tried to tell them the importance of using saline solution to reduce the pressure. I use it often and I never seem to suffer like everyone else from the effects of colds or allergies. Saline solution is mixture of salt and water. It is all natural and will not cause any ill side effects. By spraying the nasal cavity which is often dry when we turn the heat on, it can release dryness. But often as the heat comes on after a summer of sitting, it is full of allergens that might stuff up our noses. Saline spray is great for washing that all away including germs that we might have breathed in. For both cold and allergy sufferers the use of saline spray after exposure to irritants or germs is great way to avoid a stuffy nose, sneezing and being sick. Granted the taste of saline is not pleasant but the fact that it cleans our noses and keeps us healthy is well worth the nasty after taste. You can purchase saline solution at any local pharmacy and the store brand is just as effective as a name brand. If you are interested in giving the nose a real cleaning, there is also the netty pot. It looks a little like a tea kettle, but is meant to clean the entire sinus cavity by flooding the entire cavity with a burst of salt water. This is suggested by doctors who would prefer alternative treatments for sinus infections. Over the last few months, I have been busy trying to lower my cholesterol. The Doctor says mine isfamily inherited because I am so much over. I did a little familyr esearch and found that my real mother is off the charts even on medication.. Thank goodness, I recently met her. I have found so much out about myself and my family history having taken the time to locate her. Knowing your family history can help you live a healthier life. I found out that I am a very high percentage of American Indian. Did you know American Indians have an incredible high risk for high cholesteroland diabetes?

       For those of you who don?t know, I did not meet her till Iwas forty. For those who have not looked for estranged parents, I would suggest you do. Not only might you like your parent, but I had the joy of meeting the nicest lady in the world and she turned out to be my sister. I wish I had met my family earlier and had learned of my health risks sooner.  I might have done alot of things differently.

       It has been a very hard battle and until I gett ested I will not know how successful I am. But through this process I have learned an tremendous amount about eating correctly. I have also learned a lot about myself, my emotions and my eating habits. The first thing I have learned is that I ate a lot of sugar regularly. There area couple of reasons I ate sugar so much. First and foremost, it is added to almost all package food. That and high amounts of fat. Both of which are not good for you in high amounts. It allows for the body to swing high and low with sugar levels and then the body must produce insulin to correct what we have done. Eventually, the body tires out and no longer can produce the amount of insulin we need to regulate the sugar intake.

    This is how diabetes takes over. It is then that you have to immediately change your diet or chance blindness, neuropathy, limp loss or even worse death. And all you had to do was regulate your suga i ntake when you were younger. Not only does high sugar intake allow for diabetes, it is one of the main cause for high cholesterol.

Due to the fact that most of our processed foods contain refined dietary sugars and lack minerals and vitamins, our bodies must draw upon the body's micro-nutrient stores in order to be metabolized into thesystem. When these storehouses are exhausted, the process of metabolization of cholesterol and fatty acid is slowed down,contributing to higher blood serum triglycerides, cholesterol, promoting obesity due to higher fatty acid storage around organs and insub-cutaneous tissue areas. Plus, did you know cancer feeds off of sugar? The average American eats 2-3 pounds of sugar each week inprocessed foods.

Now for those of you who say you do not eat sugar a lot. Do you know that carbohydrates are sugar to your body. If you say I eat mostly fruit and vegetables, do you realize they are carbohydrates and are not created equal. I used to eat a banana every morning. Not any more, bananas are considered high on the Glycemic Index, meaning it takes no time to turn a banana into sugar in the body. Granted, it has tons of potassium which I needed for cramping, but not everyday. Peaches on the other hand are low on the index and I could eat more of them and my sugar level will not rise as fast. Yay, eat more and not raise my sugars! Suggestion- if you do not eat your fruit fast enough and it goes bad, buy sliced peaches in the can. I add them to my oatmeal and other wonderful creations. Just make sure you buy them packed in water not syrup, light or heavy. We are trying to reduce the sugar.

Christine and Alan, both in their mid-forties, had been seeing their enjoyment of their sexual relationship decline gradually for several years. Each had been feeling more and more fatigued at the end of the work day, and on those increasingly rare occasions when they did make love they both tended to be preoccupied with their "performance," usually defined as making sure that their partner had an orgasm.  

After reaching a mutual agreement that they needed to overhaul their relationship, they decided to go to Maui and participate in a workshop on tantra. In that one week their entire relationship was transformed. "We now make love almost every morning, and we both have more energy than ever," states Christine. "I feel like Superman," says Alan, "and I also feel that we are much closer emotionally."  

This may sound too good to be true, but it's actually becoming a very common experience as more couples discover some simple teachings from oriental tantric sexual practices. There are three very basic teachings that seem to be most impactful for Western couples. First is for men to learn to not ejaculate every time, which results in a tremendous turn-around in their vital energy in daily living. Second is for both partners to learn to breathe together and circulate their energy together, as one energetic whole. And third is to view lovemaking as a shared meditative experience, letting go of any goal or performance orientation.  

In Western culture it is a relatively novel concept to think of sex as a form of meditation or spiritual attunement, and any notion that it could be used for building vital energy would also be considered quite unusual. Yet these concerns are precisely the focus of many Eastern teachings about sex.  

While westerners tend to associate the term "tantra" with exotic lovemaking practices taught in the Orient, its more accurate meaning is simply the "transformation of energy." Tantric teachings of Eastern spiritual traditions are concerned with the transformation of our vital energy in all its permutations, ultimately toward the goal of spiritual attunement and enlightenment. In this context, sexual relationships and the energy that they arouse are considered resources for fueling and supporting spiritual unfoldment, not just for sex or pleasure as an end in itself.  

The essence of these teachings is that when lovemaking is not goal-directed (as in seeking to achieve orgasm or other pleasures), but rather takes on a more calm, relaxed, meditative quality, there is a subtle building of a charge of energy in the body. The Eastern tantric traditions teach that when this powerful energy is then drawn upward to our higher energy centers with the guidance of our conscious intention and visualization, it can unite us with Spirit as well as with our beloved. Another use of this energy is to direct it into specific organs or parts of the body for healing purposes. Thus, a loving partnership can directly contribute to both our spiritual unfoldment and our physical health.

In tantric lovemaking couples learn to synchronize their breathing and circulate their sexual energy through the heart. This leads naturally to coherence and entrainment with each other, and the popular metaphor "two hearts beating as one" is an allusion to this experience of "oneness." A natural outcome of this intense form of intimacy is that all the other biological oscillators involved may become entrained, both within each partner and between partners.  

In effect, Christine and Alan have learned to come into entrainment and coherence with themselves and each other, in a sense forming a greater spiritual/energetic whole. Sex has become a means of energetic and spiritual communion. The ultimate coherence or entrainment to which tantra practitioners aspire, of course, is with Spirit or Universal energy. Tantric practices are steps to create the conditions for this to occur, and the benefits to intimacy, health and greater energy are a welcome bonus.  

The Electricity of SexThe tantric teachings are based on the circulation and merging of vital energy (chi or prana) between two people. However, it is implicit that in the grand scheme of our energetic anatomy, our electromagnetic energy plays a role as well. While it may be thought of as being of a lower or denser nature than our vital energy, during intimate contact with another the two are transferred and circulated simultaneously.   In keeping with the discovery that the electromagnetic field of the heart is transmitted through touch, it's easy to see how acts of physical intimacy also allow a strong exchange of electromagnetic energy. Both kissing and sexual intercourse involve contact of moist mucous membranes, and moisture facilitates particularly strong and efficient electrical conductivity.  

It is inevitable that the communion of sex engages all aspects of our energetic nature simultaneously. It is no surprise that people sometimes even refer to their sexual experiences or feelings as "electric" or "electrifying."  



In Chapter 4 I discussed how Christine and Alan discovered the joys of tantric lovemaking. As they found, the relationship between our sexual behavior and our vital energy is very important for those who seek to cultivate their energy and promote health. In taoist energy theory, sex can serve to either enhance or deplete our vital energy, and sexual vitality is also considered a good indicator of overall health and immunity to disease.  

To understand this more fully we need to recall that there are two aspects to our vital energy: congenital chi, also called jing, and acquired chi. As I stated earlier, we are born with a limited reservoir of congenital chi or jing which cannot be replaced.  

In addition to the general wearing down of our reserves through life, there are  two specific means through which we lose jing. Women lose it through menstruation, and men through ejaculation. These two experiences are analogous in terms of the felt impact on one's energy, although for men, ejaculation brings a more acute and instantaneous experience of loss, compared to the more drawn out experience of menstruation.  

Why Men Fall AsleepThe male orgasm involves an outward explosion and release of jing whereas the female orgasm is an inward explosion. When a man ejaculates he is releasing vital essence or energy which is carried out of his body by the ejaculatory fluids. In the taoist perspective, the sperm carry the man's jing or sexual essence. As explained by Daniel Reid, semen forms "a functional bridge between organic matter and pure energy... Vitality is thus a functional fusion of biochemicals and bioenergies..."   The temporary feeling of depletion that men have after ejaculation is thus a true representation of what has happened. As men age and their natural reservoir of jing diminishes, their recovery period after ejaculation -- before they are capable of another erection and ejaculation -- increases.  

Men who use tantric sexual practices that involve semen retention -- that is, intercourse without ejaculation -- do not experience this depletion of vital essence, and in fact feel more energized afterward. It is like having their batteries recharged or receiving an infusion of vital energy, rather than the feeling of depletion. Plus, they are able to have intercourse more often, for longer periods, and enjoy more potency in the process.  

The experience of greater potency is attributable to three things. First, the sexual glands and organs are not being depleted of vital essence during ejaculation. Second. they are being strengthened and tonified by the muscular exercise involved in intercourse. Third, a great deal of vital energy is being aroused and stirred up, and then, since it is not being discharged, it is circulated and re-absorbed throughout the body.  

Why Women Don'tWomen do not lose vital essence during orgasm because it is not  being expelled out of the body, as is the case for the male. The female orgasm is more of an implosion than an explosion. However, as I mentioned above, women do lose jing during menstruation through the loss of blood -- like semen, another vital fluid and bridge between organic matter and vital energy.   There are esoteric teachings in taoist energy theory for how women, like men, can dramatically reduce the depletion of jing. The female counterpart to male semen retention in the reduction and cessation of menstruation, which can be attained through learning specific techniques of circulation and cultivation of energy. It is important to point out here that the cessation of menstruation in these cases is not due to any pathological condition, as we would assume in the West, but rather to an exceptionally high level of cultivation of vital energy and the ability to conserve it and channel it to higher centers in the body's energetic anatomy. This will not make sense to Western-trained physicians who, without an understanding of its energetic aspects, can only see cessation of periods as a disease state.  

Taoist and tantric sexual practices teach how to move and circulate the energy throughout the body, rather than simply stagnating in the sexual organs, so this energy can be absorbed and transformed into health-giving chi. This latter point is particularly important. If the charge of sexual energy is aroused and then just left "unmoved," so to speak, congestion in the sex organs will naturally develop. However, by simply learning to draw the aroused energy upward and circulate it through the body's various energetic pathways, and then using the breath and visualization to help direct this, the energy is easily circulated.  

A Cure for ImpotenceIn the Taoist tradition, male impotence is considered a result of depletion of jing through excess release of semen. How To Acheive Male Multiple Orgasms

The process of learning to have multiple orgasms for men is partly a matter of unlearning beliefs about male orgasms and male sexual response. Because sexual response and orgasm tend to come easily for men, they rarely explore other options (if it ain't broke don't fix it). But there are plenty of reasons to check out what's under the hood, even if the engine is just fine. The key is to understand that orgasm and ejaculation are two separate experiences for men.

Time Required: Learning to be a multi-orgasmic man takes time and practice over many sessions.

Here's How:

Breathing and male multiple orgasms.

If you haven't already learned about using your breath to explore your body, you may want to brush up on the importance of breathing for sexual exploration. For the exercises below you should be breathing deeply and focus on how your breathing changes as you go through sexual response, get turned on, build your sexual excitement, and experience climax, orgasm, and ejaculation.

Your PC muscle and male multiple orgasms.

Your PC muscle is the one you use to stop the flow of urine when you pee. Your PC muscle is also involved in the experience of orgasm and learning to use it helps in developing multi-orgasmic capacity. Find your PC muscle, and make sure you know what it feels like to squeeze and release it (called Kegel exercises ). If you've never done them before, learn about how do male Kegel exercises.

Discover your "point of no return".

This is the moment during sexual excitement after which ejaculation is inevitable. The best way to identify this is to masturbate and pay close attention just as you are about to ejaculate. You may notice a tingling feeling, which is the sign that you are about to hit your point of no return. Knowing what this feels like will help you know when to pull back from an orgasm. Before you learn something new, take some time to understand your baseline.

The work here is simple and fun: pleasure yourself (masturbate) as you would regularly, and pay close attention.

What things do you do to get turned on?

What happens to your body and your breathing as you become even more stimulated?

What does it feel like just before an orgasm? Just before you ejaculate?

What happens to your body after orgasm?

Practice when alone, and when you have time to focus.

Learning to distinguish your orgasm from ejaculation takes time and a keen attention. Don't do these exercises when you have to rush off to work, or make dinner for your family. I would also recommend doing these exercises on your own at first. If you have someone else there, part of your attention will be on them.

Relax and tune into your body.

This process is all about awareness. As you begin the exercise get relaxed, you may want to get naked also, and try to tune into how your body feels in the moment. Run your hands up and down your body, and really feel your body. You can touch your genitals and any other part of your body that turns you on, but don't start masturbating right away.

Masturbate slowly, paying attention to changes in your body.

Now you can masturbate however you like to, but pay attention to the energy in your body.

Are some parts of your body much warmer than others?

Does the warm energy move up (or down) your body, or stay in one place?

As you get closer to a climax how does the energy in your body change? Don't bring yourself to orgasm or ejaculate yet.

Start and stop your stimulation, play with the point of no return.

If you feel yourself reaching the point of no return stop the stimulation and take some deep breaths. Once you've pulled back from the point you can begin to stimulate yourself again. Do this at least twice. Do this to get a more detailed sense of what your point of no return is like, and discover how you can control when you cross that point.

Use your PC muscle to pull back from the point of no return.

As you feel yourself coming closer to climax stop the stimulation as you have in the past, but this time squeeze your PC muscle and hold it for a few seconds. Notice how this feels. This is the technique you can use to prevent yourself from ejaculating and create the opportunity to have several orgasms in a row.

Use your breath to increase the orgasmic energy flow.

Having multiple orgasms is not just about using your PC muscle, it's also about allowing the energy that usually flows out of you at the point of orgasm, to flow elsewhere in your body. When you're nearing the point of orgasm, notice the build up of energy (heat) in the lower part of your body, and begin to do deep breathing while visualizing the energy up towards your chest and head.

Let yourself go, see where it takes you.

The final stage of this exercise is to let yourself have an orgasm, while using the techniques learned above including breath, awareness, and squeezing your PC muscle. The first time you try this, let yourself orgasm, but squeeze your PC muscle just as you feel yourself going "over the top". It might not work the first time, but the worst that happens is that you've had an orgasm and you have to try again.

Use your breath, PC muscle, and awareness to orgasm without ejaculating. As you practice the last step above, you may find that you can get to the point of no return, pass it, and experience a tingly orgasm without ejaculating. Don't expect the orgasm to feel the same as an orgasm you have with ejaculating. Non-ejaculatory orgasms feel different, but they can be very pleasurable.


The above steps are a very brief version of techniques that men have practiced for thousands of years. Multiple orgasms are associated with elements of spiritual sexuality. Certainly doing this work involves playing with your body's energy.. If the spiritual part isn't for you, don't feel pressured to follow it. Based on your brain alone, your body is an amazing thing capable of experience intense and infinite pleasure. If you prefer to see this as a science experiment go for it!

The above instructions were written for men to practice this alone. But these exercises can be easily adapted for using with partners (and are great for anyone who has sex with men to know about).
